In The Bald Soprano, the theme of identity loss is central. The characters, built from clichés of urban bourgeois life, do not possess distinct individual traits, their identity being inseparable from the cultural and political space they represent. Stereotype becomes the main mechanism of characterization, while communication turns into a sequence of empty formulas that reveal the breakdown of any meaning. This reading draws a parallel with the experience of immigrants, capturing the pressure to adopt the behaviors and values of a dominant culture in order to avoid stigmatization. The loss of language is not literal, but reflects the impossibility of authentic communication within constructed and imposed identities. In this stage version, the four central characters are reimagined as immigrants: Mr. and Mrs. Smith live on the street, while Mr. and Mrs. Martin are victims of human trafficking. This perspective highlights the fragility of identity and the contemporary relevance of Eugène Ionesco’s play, himself an author marked by cultural dislocation.
