The Faculty of Theatre and Film of Babeș–Bolyai University is a multicultural academic institution recognized for the high quality of its education, excellence in research, vibrant and dynamic student life, and the numerous opportunities it offers for collaboration with partners beyond the academic sphere. It is considered one of Romania’s leading arts faculties in the fields of theatre, film, and media, bringing together faculty members and invited professionals who enjoy wide recognition for both their artistic achievements and academic excellence.

The faculty offers both practical and theoretical training programs that are closely aligned with the demands of contemporary artistic practice. Students may choose from a wide range of specializations, including acting, theatre directing, theatre studies, film directing, audiovisual communication, cinematography for film and television, multimedia, digital interactive media, film studies, and other related disciplines. These programs are offered through comprehensive and up-to-date curricula in both Romanian and Hungarian at undergraduate and master’s levels, while English-language master’s programs are also available. In addition, the Faculty of Theatre and Film offers a multidisciplinary doctoral program in the fields of film, media studies, and performing arts.

The Faculty of Theatre and Film was established in 1991 as a department within the Faculty of Letters of Babeș–Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. Alongside its theatre programs, the Faculty introduced a new specialization in Film and Media in 2004. In 2005, the Faculty acquired its current organizational structure under the name Faculty of Theatre and Television, and since 2018 it has operated under its present name.

Students of the Faculty benefit from access to a wide range of specialized technical infrastructure, including professional equipment, props, and other resources, both within the university’s facilities and during fieldwork and practical activities. The Faculty also publishes two peer-reviewed academic journals, Ekphrasis. Images, Cinema, Theory, Media and Studia Dramatica, both indexed in international academic databases and dedicated to presenting the latest research in their respective fields.
